In 2018, the Military Emergency Unit passed the process for the certification of the Cave Search and Rescue (CAVESAR) capacity of the European Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM), as a European assistance unit for search and rescue in caves.

The certification procedure was carried out during the participation of the UME caving search and rescue team in the international exercise EURiwaterex18, held in Madrid.

The ESP CAVESAR team is designed to realize technical search and rescue operations in caves in all conditions. The main tasks that must be achieved by the team during a mission are

• Command, Control, and means of Transmissions

• Coordination mechanism (liaison officer).

• Setting up a base for search and rescue operations in caves.

•  Internal communications.

• Medical treatment.

• Technical evaluation.

• Logistical support.

• Ability to work 24 hours a day for 7 days.
